Real-Time Passenger Information System
Star Trak - Leicester & Derby, UK
Real time passenger information system not only covers Leicestershire but has expanded to cover routes within Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
Developed in collaboration with transit agencies like First Leicester, Arriva, and Kinch, it was meticulously tailored to meet their specific requirements.
The Quality Bus Partnership (QBP) facilitated this collaboration, with all participating bus companies contributing to the detailed design documents and actively engaging throughout the main contract phase.
The system debuted in 2000, initially servicing three routes within Leicestershire. At launch, 21 buses were equipped with the technology, complemented by 15 real-time passenger information displays.
The system comprises a central server, on-street variable message signs, GPS location devices installed on buses, onboard computers, and passenger information displays.
Information exchange between vehicles and the central system occurs through radio communication, as does the transmission of data to the on-street variable message signs.
Bus priority equipment has been implemented at traffic signal junctions as another component of the system.
In 2002 the expansion of the system was significant, with more than 500 buses and several lines and passenger information panels added.
The Star Trak system, operational between 2000 and 2011, it offered valuable passenger services during its tenure.
